This tab is devoted to acknowledging different stories of people involved in the Rwandan Genocide. The boy in this picture is most likely Tutsi or moderate Hutu. He was most likely captured in the genocide and eventually let go because they lost interest or the genocide ended. The genocide was caused by a power struggle between the Hutus and Tutsi involving political issues. The genocide was hard for all of Rwanda. These people did not deserve the treatment that they got. This issue should have stayed within the government.
Gaston Bizimana
Gaston Bizimana is a victim of the genocide, he is still living, but lost a lot of his loved ones. He was 14 at the time, living in a village in the Kamonyi District. When he was on his way home, he heard grenades. Before he could get home, he came across soilders doing an ID check. He was Tutsi, so he would have been killed right then if he had shown his ID. His first thought was "Oh, I will just swim across the river." But then re-thought and decided that there were crocodiles in the river and he was not a great swimmer. He decided to just lie to the soldiers and hope for the best. He claimed to have lost his ID, the soldier pushed him down and was sure he was Tutsi, but he identified himself as Hutu to get past them. The next morning, his family woke up to burning houses across the valley. They fled, hiding in a new spot each day. He describes that the Interhamwe and the soilders would find one person, bring them to a designated spot and cut their feet so they couldn't run. Once the designated spot filled to 5 people they killed them. He was seperated from his family during this chase but luckily found some of them again. He survived along with his father. His sisters and his mother did not make it.
Madalena Mukariemeria
Madalena's story is heartbreaking. She witnessed many deaths and massacres in the Tutsi church in Kibuye. 11,000 people were killed at this church. Including Madalena's father. This is yet another example of how mad the Hutus were that the Tutsis ruled the government.
